Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death globally. World No tobacco Day is observed around the world, highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2013 is ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.
On this occasion, KALP organized an awareness campaign in association with Phoenix Market City, Mahadevapura on 31st May 2013. The event was conducted at lower ground floor between 5 to 9 p.m. Pamphlets were distributed with the information on health hazards of tobacco and importance of cessation of tobacco use in any form. Dependence of nicotine and how to overcome this was projected at the kiosk. The main focus of this event was on the counselling for tobacco cessation. We had organized a team of counsellors led by Dr. Laksminarayan Rao. People who were tobacco users were counselled by Dr. Arun Bhat. Those who were willing to quit were given further directions.
We were joined by JASCAP (Jeet Association for Support to Cancer Patients), The Lantern of Hope in this mission. The association provides information on various cancers and cancer related topics. They displayed their booklets at the event.
Though normally there is reluctance and disagreement among tobacco users to quit, we got lot of enthusiastic response. Our team is boosted with this positive response and wishes to conduct many more programs in the future.
